On 16 December 2012, Nirbhaya with her boyfriend Jeevan Prakash Sharma was waiting for a taxi to go home after watching a film in Sinmhole, South Delhi. After a long time, a bus arrives at her. In which 6 people were aboard. Nirbhaya and Avanindra also boarded this bus. After walking for some time, the bus driver changed the direction of the bus. When Avanindra is going to eat by asking the driver. Then one of them starts misbehaving with Avanindra. After which a fight ensues between the two. The accused beat Avanindra with an iron rod. which he faints.

Then the accused dragged Nirbhaya into the moving bus and took her to the back seat. After which all the 6 accused rape Nirbhaya one by one. But their cruelty does not stop there. After this one of them puts a rusty iron rod in Nirbhaya's private part.

Arrest Of Accused

By then the matter had come to the fore. The demand for the arrest of the accused started rising rapidly from all sides. Delhi Police was successful in arresting all the 6 accused. The accused were identified as Ram Singh (bus driver), Mukesh Singh (Ram Singh's brother), Vinay Sharma (assistant gym instructor), Pawan Gupta (fruit seller), Akshay and a 17-year-old juvenile from Badaun, Uttar Pradesh. .
Ram Singh committed suicide in judicial custody. Whereas one was sentenced to a maximum of 3 years for not being 18 years old.

On 13 March 2012, the remaining 4 accused were convicted and sentenced to death. The Supreme Court of which also upheld the sentence.
